Springfield Post 176 used Henry Mahns’ two-hit, two-RBI afternoon to beat Falls Church 130, 4-2, Sunday at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Mahns doubled in Springfield’s three-run third and finished 2-for-3, giving the Snakeheads a key boost.
Falls Church struck first in the second when Matthew Hitchcock singled in Noah Plank. Springfield answered in the third with its best inning of the game, as Calvin Colon singled home a run before Mahns followed with a run-scoring double to put the Snakeheads ahead 3-1.
The visitors cut into the lead in the fifth on Stefan Luketic’s single that scored Mason Tillman, but Springfield added another run in the sixth. Colon’s run helped extend the lead and close out the win.
Mahns was Springfield’s top offensive threat, while Colon drove in a run and scored one. Rubino, Johnson and Sid Barlow each scored once, and Barlow also stole a base. Springfield finished with six hits.
Falls Church got a strong day from Hitchcock and Mason Tillman, who each had two hits. Hitchcock also drove in a run, while Luketic added the other RBI for Falls Church. Noah Plank scored the visitors’ other run as Falls Church finished with a hit.
Jack Cavallario worked six innings for Springfield, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Gavin Berry took the loss for Falls Church after giving up four runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking two. Andrew Grane closed it out with a scoreless inning for Springfield.
